Tristan Scherwey has received supplementary disciplinary action for an incident that occurred Saturday in Champions Hockey League action. As a result, he will miss one game.
CHL Sports Board
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence, the player Tristan Scherwey (#10) of SC Bern, time approximately 00:56, made contact with an opponent deemed Checking to the Head or Neck Area (IIHF Rule 124).
From the perspective of the CHL Sports Board, Scherwey made contact with an unsuspecting opponent, with the main point of contact the head area of the opposing player. The contact was elevated to supplementary discipline due to the direct contact to the head/neck area of the unsuspecting opposing player.
Considering the opposing player did not have possession or control of the puck and simply made a chip play, Scherwey has to have some regard for the puck and cannot make contact with a player that is considered unsuspecting and defenseless. Scherwey skated at a high speed around the opposite side of the net in a path directly at the opposing player. What made the contact illegal, was the elevation into the check, principal contact to the head of opposing player and the unorthodox approach of spinning into the check to make his contact point the back part of his shoulder, leaving the opposing player defenseless. The opposing player did sustain an apparent injury on the play.
The CHL Sports Board suspends Tristan Scherwey (#10) of SC Bern for 1 game, effective immediately. He will miss his team's last group stage game on 6 September against Black Wings Linz. He will be eligible to play in the Round of 32.
Key Points:
1. Elevation into check
2. Principal point of contact to head area
3. Contact to head was avoidable
4. Not a repeat offender
