In what is a historic event for the league, Comarch Cracovia host Sparta Prague in the first ever Champions Hockey League game to take place in Poland, with Comarch Cracovia the first Polish team to play in the competition.
However the history doesn't stop there – in tonight's game at home to Sparta Prague they are hoping to break the CHL's attendance record by playing at the 15,000-capacity Tauron Arena.
Two years in a row, Sparta have been to the CHL's Round of 16 and were close to going beyond, suffering defeat in the late going both times. They have their sights set on a long CHL campaign, but first things first – they can't look beyond Cracovia in this opener.
"We know there’s a difficult task ahead of us as it’s not going to be easy to take on Sparta Prague or Färjestad Karlstad. However, we will fight and try to do our best. Most of us have never played in a competition at this level so the Champions Hockey League games are a big thing for us, probably the most important in our lives," said Cracovia netminder Rafal Radziszewski. "We all have to give 100% and hope that fortune will favour us if we want to face up to the challenge. We're ready to fight for it."
"Cracovia is a bit of a mystery for us because we don’t know much about Polish hockey in general," admitted Sparta head coach Jiri Kalous. "However, we have gathered some information about them and we know that they like to play an active, offensive kind of hockey with a lot of forechecking. It is going to be tough but I think that we are capable of winning the game."
