Travelling to Fribourg already three goals down on aggregate from last week's match, the last thing Vitkovice needed was to concede early in this game. However that they did – Andrei Bykov's centring pass was deflected past his own goalie by Ondrej Roman to put the hosts ahead with 16:12 played.
The visitors came straight back. With a delayed penalty being signalled on Fribourg, Yan Stastny beat Benjamin Conz from close range to tie it up on the night just 30 seconds later - however, they still trailed by three on aggregate.
Vitkovice were though unable to hold the tie going into the period break, another pass from Bykov and this time Yannick Rathgeb beating Bartosak at the near post with just 20 seconds on the clock.
"We had a very good start in this game and it was important to get the lead after the first period. In the third period we played not very well - in the end we still won it and that's what counts," said Rathgeb, who's goal ties him for the overall CHL scoring lead with teammate Roman Cervenka.
Period two started in the best possible way for Fribourg, adding another goal at 24:50 – Greg Mauldin redirecting a Julien Sprunger shot, and the puck then deflecting in off defender Jan Vytisk's stick to make it 3-1.
Bykov, who figured in on all of Fribourg's goals, said, "Of course I am happy to be able to score 3 points in this game, but the most important was the win as a team tonight. But yes, sometimes you score and then its even better, especially when it helps to grab a victory."
The two-goal lead on the night was held by Fribourg until just under 10 minutes to go in the game – Eric Nemec pouncing on a rebound to cut it back to 3-2 at 50:19.
"When they scored the first goal we were able to react in the next shift, but when they took the lead again short before the first break it became very difficult. We knew that it is hard to come back from a three goal deficit and time was running against us," said Vitkovice forward Rostislav Olesz, who was unable to get on the scoresheet despite 3 shots on goal. "We tried and tried, but they scored on a power play while we were not able to get the puck in. In the end we had so many scoring chances, but we hit the post or the goalie and that was the difference today."
Vitkovice tried late on to tie the game on the night, but Fribourg held on for a 3-2 win and an 8-4 aggregate win to make the CHL Semi-Finals for the first time.
"Frolunda is the best team in the CHL and it's gonna be tough for us," Yathgeb admitted. "But if we can beat this team, we will know that anything is possible."
