Of the four quarter-finals in this year's Champions Hockey League, the one that seems to be attracting the most attention is the one that features a re-match last year's Final between Frolunda Gothenburg and Lulea Hockey.
To refresh your memory, Frolunda led 2–0 after 40 minutes in that game and looked poised to hoist the European Trophy, but Lulea snatched it from their hands with four straight goals in the third period.
Frolunda will use those memories as motivation, not only to exact revenge on the team that beat them, but to move one step closer to realizing their goal of becoming European Champions.
"Of course it's going to be revenge for us because we lost the Final last year, but it was so close," says Frolunda forward Oscar Fantenberg. "Of course we want revenge on them, but I think we're going to take it simply as a game and not try to think so much about last year, but of course it's going to be a little bit of revenge if we win."
One of the big reasons that Lulea were able to come back in last year's Final was the goaltending of Joel Lassinantti, who kept his team close with several big saves, particularly in the second period, when Frolunda were pressing hard for the knock-out punch. Lassinantti is one of several returning members on the team who are looking to repeat as champions.
"A lot of guys who played here last year still have that game in our minds, so we can take some parts of that game with us," the Lulea goalie says.
Reflecting on the closing minutes of the game in front of the home Lulea fans, Lassinantti fondly recalls, "The last seconds of that game I was just staring and looking at the crowd which was cheering, and it was incredible."
Of couse, as both teams were in the Final last year, they both have it in mind to be back there this year but only one of them will have a chance after this quarter-final is finished.
