SC Bern will go into their home half of this Round of 32 tie in good shape, following a 4-1 road victory over Red Bull Salzburg.
The visitors from the Swiss capital got off to a good start, taking the lead through Maxim Noreau with just 8:04 played. That got start became a great one 2:42 later, as Mark Arcobello added to his assist on the opening goal to double Bern's lead with only 10:46 played. The Red Bulls found themselves on a powerplay shortly after going two goals down, but were unable to get past Leonardo Genoni – a theme of most of the game, which saw Bern head into the break with their two-goal lead.
A scoreless middle period saw the teams come back on to the ice for the third still with Salzburg trailing by two. Eric Blum made Bern's life more comfortably as he added the visitors' third with 44:30 played to give them some breathing room – Arcobello recording another assist on the play. With nine minutes to play, it got worse for the home side when Martin Pluss was given far too much time in front of Starkbaum's net to slot home.
Bern looked to be heading for a shutout of the Red Bulls on their own ice, that was until the final minute when Bill Thomas's slap shot from the top of the circle pulled one back for Salzburg. However, there was no time for any more scoring, and Bern skated off with a 4-1 win.
"We had more chances but fewer goals," said Salzburg's Thomas Raffl. "We know we can be effective too. We didn't lose our self-confidence. We made mistakes in the offense zone and in the defense zone but we showed in phases some very good play for an EBEL team versus a top European team."
"We had enough good scoring chances to win the game. At the moment we're a bit unlucky going forward, a few players maybe didn't bring their A-game today either," conceded Red Bulls' coach Greg Poss in his post-game interview. "However, we can say with confidence that we can score four goals against Bern and capitalise on those scoring chances next week. They used their chances very effectively tonight and won the game."
"Our goalie played a great game – he gave us the chance to win," said Bern coach Kari Jalonen after the game. "We played a solid road game, good defensively, and used our opportunities at the other end."
