After a narrow loss to Frolunda Gothenburg in their first CHL game, Grizzlys Wolfsburg entered their second game at home highly motivated to get their first CHL win. They did more than that, completely dismantling Dynamo Pardubice 6-0.
It was more than just the one-sided score, as the DEL finalists dominated every facet of the game, right from the opening face-off. They dominated the first period by out-shooting Pardubice 15-4 but only led 1-0, on a goal by captain Tyler Hoskins in the 11th minute, as he perfectly converted Sebastien Furchner's pass on a 2-on-1.
There was no faulting Pardubice goalie Martin Ruzicka on the opening goal, and he was otherwise perfect in the opening period. In the second, however, the Grizzlys busted the game open with three goals, then added two more in the third. Three of Wolfsburg's goals were on the power play, including two by Furchner, who had a three-point night overall. Tyson Mullock, Brent Aubin, Jeff Likens and Haskins all had two points each, while Felix Brueckmann made 14 saves for the shutout.
With this result, the Grizzlys need just a point when the two teams meet again in Pardubice on Wednesday. If they don't get it, they would still have a chance to advance if they win in Gothenburg in Group A's last game on Friday. As for Pardubice, they'll have to regroup from this game and focus on what they need to do next time out.
"Basically, I don't think it was a 6-0 game over 60 minutes. Most of the things that could have gone wrong today for us went wrong," said an almost speechless Pardubice coach Peter Draisaitl. About his team, he said, "We have to figure out whether we want to play together as a five-man unit or play as five individuals."
