After a wild first period in which the teams tied 3-3, the Vaxjo Lakers took command of the game with BK Mlada Boleslav and won 7-3. Read more in Gamecentre.
At first it looked like the Vaxjo Lakers would run away with the game, scoring twice in the first 2:26. Then BK Mlada Boleslav battled back with a couple of quick ones of their own. Each team added one more in a wild first period that had six goals in total, including two by Mlada Boleslav on breakaways.
“We got off to a flying start and came out really strong,” said Vaxjo coach Sam Hallam. “After that I think that we went down a little mentally and in our readiness. A team that plays like Boleslav and many other teams from the Czech Republic are really good at rushes. They are skilled passers and that hurt us right away. In the end of the second period I think we found the way back and from there on and out I’m very pleased with how we played.”
After that, the Lakers settled down and dominated. They added two goals in the second and two more in the third to win 7-3. Tempers flared late in the game with several skirmishes, but they had no affect on the outcome.
Martin Latal, who scored Mlada Boleslav's third goal on a breakaway, summed up:
“We didn’t know what to expect because a lot of our players don’t have any experience with Swedish hockey. We don’t want to make excuses because we worked hard. It was a good experience for us but you could see that Vaxjo are a very good team. They are a top team in Sweden.”
Calle Rosen and Geoff Platt each scored twice for the Lakers, the latter playing his first competitive game with the team. Tomas Urban led Mlada Boleslav with a goal and an assist. With no points from their two away games in Group L, they will have to get it done at home if they hope to advance.
Hallam summed up: "This was only our second game and the third week on ice. One part is to get used to being on the ice and playing games again. You could see that in many situations that the timing is off and lost pucks here and there. Only time can change that. Other than that we have a lot of things we can improve on but if you ask me the same question in December I will give you the same answer."
