Considered one of Europe's top teams, Skelleftea AIK are huge favourites to win Group N with the Vienna Capitals expected to battle with KalPa Kuopio for the second advancing spot. The team from the Austrian capital did themselves a huge favour toward advancing by scoring a 3-2 overtime victory on home ice over Skelleftea.
Visiting Skelleftea carried the play most of the night and when recent re-acquisition Oscar Moller opened the scoring in the 11th minute, it looked like they were on their way. But the Caps were fortuitous in the middle frame, scoring twice and taking the lead on Jerry Pollarstrone's power-play goal. Skelleftea very nearly tied it again on a 5-on-3 late in the period but J.P Lamoureux made an unbelieable save diving to his left and making a backanded catch to rob Adam Pettersson.
"My save in the second period was pure instinct. I'm happy that it worked out that way, as this was also a big motivational push for the whole team," said Lamoureux, who was strong all game with 33 saves. "We can be proud of our performance today. This win is a perfect start into the new season."
Andrew Calof brought Skelleftea back even on a power play early in the third and tried to get more, but were unable to beat Lamoureux again. That set up Fraser's overtime heroics. The defenceman broke through and skated right in on Erik Hanses and beat him five-hole after just 31 seconds of extra time for his second point of the night.
"I'm very happy today, especially about a strong defensive performance," said Vienna head coach Serge Aubin. "And this against Skelleftea, one of the best teams in Europe. Also very positive was our penalty killing. Today we have seen what teamwork and will can result in. We will not take time off, though, as there is still a lot to improve."
"I think we played a decent game," though Skelleftea coach Fredrik Oberg, who didn't seem worried by the loss. "The second period wasy okay – we lost 2-0 and maybe didn't attack the net enough. There were some unlucky bounces for us and we came back and tied it up, and then an unlucky bounce in the end. We got one point, so we're gonna qualify later."
